The controls described below apply to all Gantt chart views.
Use the Gantt charts tool bar to change characteristics of the Gantt Chart view to better meet your needs. The tool bar includes features to scale, filter, and copy to the clipboard.
The Teamport Gantt charts display unique features of the project not found in standard project scheduling tools. These features can make a significant difference in helping you to discover attributes in the project's design that may be beneficial or harmful to the organization's goals for the project:
Variance presents a level of confidence in the simulated start and finish of a product, phase, task, or dependency. The black horizontal line indicates total variance. The gray colored area represents the first standard deviation from the end of the Gantt bar. The number of simulation runs must be sufficient to create a reasonable sample set to draw from or this feature diminishes in value. The make up of the project can also increase variance, such as if multiple critical paths are present based on small variations in the simulation Monte Carlo process.
Typically variance will tighten as the project design comes together, however variance is fundamental to the simulator so it will always be present. Substantial variance can indicate that parts of the project are able to vary widely. Wide variation is not a problem but you should be comfortable as to why it is present.
Coordination effort is presented as Gantt bars to indicate the duration of communication between two activities. Details about the dependent relationship between two activities can be viewed in the detail panel by selecting the dependency name to the left. Note that the duration of communication does not represent directly the effort. For example, two teams could have communication requirements at the level of a few hours per week over months and the Gantt bar will show continuous engagement.
Similar to the Designer tool bars, this tool bar can be undocked by dragging one of the vertical white lines that divides controls.
Control | Name and Type | Description |
View zoom control | Controls the amount of content displayed below the tool bar
Calendar scale control | Sets the calendar scale from days to quarters per column. Scale ranges from days, weeks, named months, numbered months, numbered quarters. Named months displayed above.
Team filter | The Gantt view can be filtered by individual teams or "ALL TEAMS." When filtered by individual teams other teams referenced by communication requirements are implicitly included.
Phase Expand/Collapse | To reduce clutter all activities can be hidden. When hidden all communication requirements will also be hidden. When expanded (typical usage) individual activities can be selected to see details
Variance filter | When selected, variance will display at the ends of each Gantt Bar. Variance will be impacted by the number of simulation runs used to develop the forecast as well as factors unique to a project.
Coordination filter | When selected, coordination requirements will display along with the name of the dependency creating the coordination demand. Selecting the dependency will display a detail pane with more information.
Copy to clipboard | When selected, an image of the Gantt chart will be copied to the clipboard for use in other documents. The image will retain the filters in use when the copy is created. |
Note: Buttons may display as disabled when the content it controls is not displayed. The calendar scale controls will disable when the limit of the calendar scale has been reached. The Copy-to-clipboard button may display as disabled in some circumstances but the function is always available.
